WEB DESK – After the controversial recommendation by the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) in which the country’s top clerics maintained that there was no minimum age criteria for a girl to be get married, the forever present epidemic in Pakistan had produced another example where one 70-years-old man tried to tie the knot with a 12-years-old girl.
According to the televised reports, the police arrived on the scene in Nosheroferoze area and arrested the old-aged groom and Nikkah Khwa’n (a religious cleric who conducts the marriage) on Saturday.
Police received the information about the marriage through a call upon which they made a quick action.
However, the police couldn’t stop the Nikah due to arriving late but stopped further ceremonies of the wedding before arresting the two. The girl was also taken in protective custody.
Not to forget that CII had earlier recommended that: First, it’s not necessary for a husband to seek permission from first wife to get married for the second time according to Islamic teachings. Second, Islam does not bar the marriage of an under adolescent age girl child.
This controversial recommendations raised a huge debate among political parties and civil society of Pakistan.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), however, surpass all and issued a formal statement after party’s core committee meeting in which they denounced the controversial statement.
But it was the Sindh Assembly who went as far as passing a joint resolution against CII and demanded its dissolution for being anti-women.
Criticizing the resolution of Sindh Assembly, the head of JUI-F Maulana Fazlur Rehman termed the whole lot of lawmakers as antagonists of Ideology of Pakistan.
