Dislocated residents due to Mangla Dam project still await assistance

Mangla Dam Project

ISLAMABAD – The representative of affected families from Mangla Dam’s uplifting project, one Jahangir Akhtar believed that dislocated residents of the other side have been ignored by the government.

Akhtar said that residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir were given compensation while residents of the other sides of River Jehlum never got anything.

He said “While AJK residents have received compensation, people living on the other side of Jhelum River in Rawalpindi and Jhelum districts have been discriminated against.”

He also added that the government must compensate the people who have sacrificed their land for the expansion of the water reservoir and have been waiting for financial assistance, resettlement and rehabilitation for years.

Akhtar also announced to go on go on hunger strike for an indefinite period at Kallar Syedan to press for the rights of locals affected by the Mangla Dam project.

I want to help people who have been uprooted because of Mangla Dam’s expansion, since they lack representation in the corridors of power, he said.
