Yet another blow to anti-polio drive as one female worker shot dead


WEB DESK – Another below to anti-polio drive in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) came when a female polio worker was killed in the gun attack at Sukari area of Bannu district.

According to the preliminary reports, the worker was shot dead in front of her house by unknown armed men on Monday.

According to the eyewitnesses, the gunmen were riding a motorbike who easily fled the crime scene.

Upon receiving the report, local police arrived at the crime scene and shifted the deceased polio worker in hospital. Later, a case was registered against the unknown gunmen for murder charges in Bannu Cantt’s police stations.

The anti-polio organizations like WHO, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have been supporting Pakistan’s federal and provincial governments to eradicate polio in country. However, there is something not right. PakistanTribe had reported stories where anti-polio programmes like Sehat Ka Insaf have been marred with corruption allegations not from the opposition but also from the internal sources of political party which was running the campaign. PakistanTribe also reported several stories where anti-polio workers were either attacked, abducted or killed.
