WEB DESK – After World Health Organization (WHO) has termed Peshawar the ‘largest reservoir of Polio virus’ A massive anti-polio campaign will be launched to vaccinate as many as 750,000 minors in the district.
According to the campaign organizers, around 12,500 vaccinators would go door-to-door every Sunday across Peshawar district until end of April. The anti-polio workers will administer drops to children for various diseases including polio, tuberculosis, tetanus, pneumonia, whooping cough, measles and hepatitis.
Moreover, 6,700 police officials would be deployed on security duty during the campaign.
“At least 750,000 children will be administered the vaccine in Peshawar district where 335,000 houses have been identified for the purpose,” campaign organiser Yunus Zaheer said.
He said the campaign is likely to be extended to other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province later.
According to the WHO, Pakistan recorded 91 cases of polio last year, up from 58 in 2012.
All of South Asian countries are now polio-free except for ‘the land of pure’ where hardliner outlawed militant groups like Taliban abduct, attack and kill anti-polio campaigners.
The anti-polio organizations like WHO, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have been supporting Pakistan’s federal and provincial governments to eradicate polio in country. However, there is something not right. PakistanTribe had reported stories where anti-polio programmes like Sehat Ka Insaf have been marred with corruption allegations not from the opposition but also from the internal sources of political party which was running the campaign. PakistanTribe also reported several stories where anti-polio workers were either attacked, abducted or killed.
