WEB DESK – After giving salaries to as many as 361 ghost employees, the national authority to keep accurate and up to date data of all citizens has been found involved in issuing 100,000 bogus birth certificates in Lahore.
The birth certificate is the primary or basic document for taking admission in school, applying for national identity card or passport.
It was revealed on Wednesday by the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) itself that 150 union councils of Lahore were behind issuing bogus birth certificates. According to the by-laws and standard procedures of NADRA, it requires signature of the chairman to issue a computerized birth certificate.
The union council officials, allegedly received bribes to assist in the process. NADRA officials said action will be taken against those responsible for the act.
On March 21, PakistanTribe reported that NADRA sacked at least 361 ghost employees from its lines. It was also learnt that salaries were regularly drawn in the name of those ghost employees. Moreover, same day, 12 NADRA employees were sacked for their alleged involvement in issuingfake Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs).
NADRA works under Ministry of Interior for keeping up to date records of all nationals. It was established in 2000 by then government.
Currently, NADRA is working under an interim chairman, Imtiaz Tajwar, who actually is an additional secretary with interior division. Tajwar resumed charge as NADRA’s chairman on January 13 after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government sacked Tariq Malik from the post.
