ISLAMABAD – The top most auditor of Pakistan, who was supposed to keep check on the state machinery for there could be any misconduct regarding use of resources, is currently facing trouble due to an extraordinary increment in salary and utilizing unnecessary funds.
According to at least one source in Public Accounts Committee (PAC)’s subcommittee, National Assembly’s committee mainly to deal with corruption issues, the Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) Buland Akhtar Rana could not justify privileges he withdrew from his job.
The source also added that Akhtar might face the music if he would not be able to justify his acts.
PAC took notice of the matter by citing the increment in Akhtar’s salary as ‘unauthorized’ and ordered further probe. Later, it was discovered that country’s top auditor was drawing as much as Rs100,000 per month in terms of transportation charges. Interestingly, he continued using official vehicle with a driver while separately charging for the service.
Source claimed that PAC’s subcommittee has gathered enough evidence to put Akhtar in a tight spot and now it would be very difficult to let him off the hook.
Accountant General of Pakistan (AGP) is a constitutional post. Over the charges of misconduct, only the Supreme Judicial Council could remove the office bearer of AGP which would be formed by the government after approval of National Assembly.
