Rape Cases in India: Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal under huge criticism after sexual assault | PakistanTribeMUMBAI – Indian magazine Tehelka editor, Tarun Tejpal comes under huge criticism after sexual assault attempt on the woman journalist colleague in Goa’s ‘Think’ conclave.

Mumbai Press Club issued the strong condemnation notice and demanded the urgent investigation fo the case.

“The Press Club, Mumbai is deeply shocked over the criminal act of sexual assault by Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal on a woman colleague in Goa’s ‘Think’ conclave. The incident has brought disrepute to the media and to the way its senior members conduct themselves” stated in the official press release.

Here is the official PR of Mumbai Press Club:

The Press Club demands that the Goa Police must conduct a detailed probe into the incident. Without losing any time, the law-enforcement machinery must take charge of the CCTV footage of the hotel, record the statement of the victim, and charge-sheet and arrest Tejpal for his criminal act.

Tejpal’s ‘atonement’ and having ‘recused’ himself as editor is a clever ploy and is no answer to such a heinous act; it must be dealt with under legal statues.

The Press Club also finds the response of the Editor of Tehelka, Shoma Chowdhary, insensitive and insufficient. As editor she is required to constitute an internal complaints committee which should include independent members.

This committee must conduct a parallel inquiry and take the necessary disciplinary editorial action against Tejpal.

We at this stage are fully behind the survivor and are ready to render whatever help possible, within our scope.

Here is the Editors Guild of India Statement on allegations of sexual assault involving Editor of Tehelka and journalist:

The allegations of grave sexual assault made by a journalist of Tehelka against the magazine’s editor Tarun Tejpal, are on the face of it shocking and shameful. Such incidents anywhere are condemnable in the strongest terms but the Guild is particularly saddened that they should engulf a media organisation.

It is emphatically the philosophy of the Guild that the media that is in the business of holding public persons accountable should itself be held to the highest standards of conduct and decency. The conduct that has been alleged would constitute grave sexual assault at the very least taking advantage of the authority and power of the perpetrator within the media organisation. It also brings out vulnerability of young women journalists who need to be protected and free to pursue their careers without the fear of being subjected to such assaults.

There out not to be any attempt to cover up or play down this extremely serious incident. Self proclaimed atonement and recusal for a period are hardly the remedies for what the allegations show to be outright criminality, The full force of the law must be brought into its investigation and prosecution. Due regard must be paid to the sensitivity and privacy of the victim who has already been put to grievous suffering.

Tarun Tejpal, chief editor of India’s Tehelka investigative magazine, has resigned for six months after a colleague accused him of sexual assault.

Mr Tejpal “has recused himself for six months as the Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka, after being accused of sexual assault by a woman journalist in the magazine,” a Tehelka source was quoted as saying.

A person close to the journalist spoke to NDTV and said it was an act of “grave sexual misconduct”.

“It happened not once, but twice and the girl is completely shattered and emotionally scarred. She continues to put forward her plea that Tehelka should set up a committee to look into sexual harassment cases according to (established) guidelines,” she said.
