“The first time she saw him, she flipped. The first time he saw her, he ran. That was the second grade, but not much has changed by the seventh. She says: “My Bryce. Still walking around with my first kiss.” He says: “It’s been six years of strategic avoidance and social discomfort.” But in the eighth grade everything gets turned upside down. And just as he’s thinking there’s more to her than meets the eye, she’s thinking that he’s not quite all he seemed.
This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny new voices. Wendelin Van Draanen is at her best here with a knockout cast of quirky characters and a hilarious series of misunderstandings and missed opportunities. But underlying the humor are two teens in transition. They are each learning to look beyond the surface of people, both figuring out who they are, who they want to be, and who they want to be with.”
If you want a book that makes your smile like their is no tomorrow and makes your heart jump with sheer joy than this is the book for you.A beautiful telling of a heartwarming, hilarious first love. This book is truly adorable no other words could describe the simplicity and the in nonce of the book and the whirlpool of emotions that this book takes you. The story pulls you in like a and you’re along for the ride every step of the way.
The story revolves around Julie Baker and Bryce Loski, told in alternate point of view of both characters which I might say is very alluring. We get the to be inside the head of both characters and find out what they feel. Both our characters first meet when Bryce moves in next door to Juli and so we follow their hilarious journey from 2nd grade to 8th grade. It was fun to see sarcastic Bryce and spunky Juli
Flipped as per its title was flipped halfway through, the first half was for Julie pining after Bryce while in the second half the situation is reversed or flipped! It was a very interesting the use of the title as it dictates the upcoming in the book. That being said this is one of the hidden gems. The writing is so sweet yet to empowering in its own, it stands out and is enthralling to the point you can see yourself as the character. True to its nature throughout the book the author has done an exceptional work.
The dialogues themselves are so adorable that you just want sit and grin like Cheshire cat. That and the fact that it is absolutely hilarious, we all remember how we were as children and this is a great reminder of it’s unique voice coupled with the how the writer integrates lessons throughout the book. One the main lessons being that we simply cannot like a person based on how they look, I know its a old one but it is told so exceptionally in this book that you cannot help but look everything in a different light.
“One’s character is set at an early age, son. The choices you make now will affect you for the rest of your life.”
This book has absolutely everything one can ask for
A strong female – check
A good story- check
Amazing character development – check
A lesson on life and yourself – check
Hilarious dialogues – check
A sense of childhood nostalgia – definitely check
Now for the cover, some would say that it is probably too simple but the fact is that the cover portrays the book perfectly; simple and innocent. That is the beauty of this book.
“Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss…” He turned to me. “But every once you will find someone who’s iridescent, and when you do, nothing will ever compare.”
Flipped is one of those books that no matter how many times you read it, you just keep coming back for more and if you read a book more than twice well there is no doubt that is absolutely amazing. So I give this book Five Stars and it is worth every one of them.
