WELLINGTON – Pakistani tail-end resistance could not save them from a humiliating whitewash at the hands of New Zealand as they fell 15 runs short in the fifth ODI.

Earlier, New Zealand were put to bat first by Pakistan. The Balck Caps posted a fighting total of 271/7 in their 50 overs.

Colling Manru did the early damage to Pakistan, before top-edging one from Rumman Raees for his 34. Captain Kane Williamson and Guptill built on the base Manru had provided. Williamson got out on 22, leaving his side 101/2 in 18th over.

Swashbuckling opener Martin Guptill scored another century in the series, 13th of his career. He built a valuable 112-run partnership with Ross Taylor on a tricky surface. Taylor scored his 58th fifty in the process.

Pakistan bowled and fielded particularly, probably best in the series. They recovered from the damage Manru, Guptill and Taylor had done, choked New Zealand for runs in the middle overs and bowled cleverly in the death overs. New Zealand, who were looking dangerous with 213/3 at one stage, were held back to 271/7 at the end.

Pakistan’s top order could not resist the new ball scare again. Henry destroyed Green Shirts batting line removing, Fakhar, Babar and Umar Amin on a total of 31.

Joining the party, Grandhomme removed Pakistan skipper Hafeez at 6 and Ferguson took away Sarfraz for 2 respectively. Middle-order batsmen Haris Sohail (63) and tail-ender Shadab Khan (54) rebuilt the inning, adding invaluable 105 runs for the sixth wicket. That was when Santner struck, removing both set batsmen one after other.

Faheem Ashraf’s late onslaught, followed by Amer Yamin and Nawaz’s resistance went in vain as Pakistan fell 15 runs short of the target, failing to avoid second consecutive whitewash at the hands of Kiwis.
