Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the complete Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2018 schedule on Thursday. As per schedule, Peshawar Zalmi, arguably the most acclaimed franchise of the PSL will enter as the defending champions in the tournament when they face newcomers Multan Sultans in the opening game of the league on February 22, in Dubai.
The mega tournament will stretch on 33 days from February 22nd to March 25th next year. Here are five interesting facts about the schedule of PSL 2018 Schedule:
- Abu Dhabi Ignored
PCB has interestingly decided to leave out Abu Dhabi from its venue lists despite it being a permanent venue for hosting international games.
Sources privy to PCB confirm that the board had initially planned to host 6 matches on the venue but the logistics cost did not allow it.
Which ultimately translates as a fact that all the games will be played on 4 venues including Dubai, Sharjah, Lahore, and Karachi.
2. Karachi Hosts Final
The National Stadium Karachi has been honored to host the final of the premier league on March 25. This will be the first time in 9 years that Karachi hosts any international T20 league match.
The last time an international match was played at the venue was February 2009, when Pakistan played Sri Lanka. This was the same year when the Srilankan team was attacked during the third Test match in Lahore resulting in a 9-year drought of international cricket in the country.
It will be very interesting to see how Sindh government arranges the big finale in the city of lights, as it will determine the future of international cricket in the city as well as in the country.
3. Inclusion of Sixth Team
Out of the five regions headlining the proposal, Multan Sultan was picked as the sixth team to be included in the PSL Family.
Faisalabad, Dera Murad Jamali, FATA, and Hyderabad were the other regions that the PCB had proposed for the sixth side.
4. Extra Team but No Additional Game
With the addition of Multan Sultans, the total number of games should have been increased from 24 to 34, as initially proposed. But, PCB went against the initial proposal and decided to organise the same number of games in the league. However, an increase in the number of games is expected in the next season.
The season will kick off with a ceremony at the Dubai International Stadium. All teams will play against each other twice before the top four teams qualify for the play-off stage, two of which will be played in Lahore followed by a mega final in Karachi.
