KARACHI – This year’s theme for Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day was ‘Choose to Include’. Like every year Special Olympics Pakistan arranged the event in order to celebrate and honour the services to the cause of intellectually disabled persons of the Special Olympics founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
On the occasion special children who won gold and silver medals internationally in Special Olympics spoke about their experience abroad, delivered speeches and were awarded with prizes.
President SOP, Ronaq Lakhani was also present on the occasion and famous actress Sarwat Gillani, Ambassador of SOP, while addressing the event said that real celebrities are these children and parents should not bound them just because they are handicapped and let them enjoy freely, consequently they’d prosper in their walks of life.
The event was followed by closing ceremony of Young Athlete Summer Camp 2017 that had started earlier and came to an end. In which basketball, swimming and gymnastics were introduced for the very first time. Winners of basketball, gymnastics also made group photographs along with parents and teachers.
Many fun filled activities were arranged for the children as well as parents which included magic show, puppet show, face paintings, jumping castles, races, small rides and ice-cream stalls and distribution of gift hampers, raffle draw and refreshments. Students of Nixor College sang songs and entertained the audience.
This day is an annual celebration of Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s life – who was also sister of former U.S. President, John F. Kennedy – and a global call for people to live in a more unified society in sport, in the community and in the work place. By committing acts of inclusion, acceptance and unity for and with people with intellectual disabilities, we will continue to build on the legacy of Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
