18 killed, 70 injured in twin Parachinar blast

PESHAWAR – At least 18 have been confirmed dead, and more than 70 injured in two suicide attacks near Akbar Khan hotel in the heart of Parachinar city in Kurram Agency.

Political agent told The Express Tribune that the explosions targeted Youm-ul-Quds procession, participants of which were dispersing after the conclusion of the program.

The first blast came during rush hour in Toori bazaar, where people were buying food for iftar. When people rushed to the site to rescue the wounded, a second blast took place.

According to the ISPR, two army aviation helicopters have been taken off from Peshawar to Parachinar for speedy evacuation of the injured. The rescue operation is in progress.

The site of the blast was surrounded by security personnel and the injured persons were shifted to nearby hospitals.

The area where the blast had occurred has been declared a Red Zone six months earlier and stringent security measures have always been taken to secure the area.

Emergency has been imposed across all hospitals in Parachinar to cope with the alarming situation.

According to sources, many of the injured are in critical condition hence the death toll could rise further.

Earlier during the day, a bomb blast had killed as many as 13 people in Quetta and injured scores.
