OVAL – Courtesy to brilliant batting by Mendis and Gunathilaka, Sri Lanka beat India in the eighth game of ICC Champions Trophy 2017 at the Kennington, Oval.
India’s total was the highest of the tournament so far, surpassing the 319 for three they amassed against Pakistan.
It was a typically muscular effort from India as they pursue an 11th win from their last 14 ODI matches, and a 15th victory in their last 18 meetings with Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka, beaten by 99 runs against South Africa in their first match, faced a daunting task as they try to keep alive their hopes of making the semi-finals.
Kusal Perera having retired hurt with a troubled hamstring is feeling good enough to walk down the stairs himself. He played an important hand through the middle of the innings, ensuring the platform set by top order didn’t go to waste. And who put on that stand? A batsman all the rage back home, Kusal Mendis, and a man who was on the standby list until a few days ago, Danushka Gunathilaka.
Kusal Mendis is the Man of the Match. “Very good wicket. India had a good start, with Dhawan making a hundred. But for us, Danushka supported me very well. It was my first game against India and I’m happy to have contributed.”
