Colombo: Chamil Cooray of Sri Lanka dominated the Sri Lankan National Carrom Championship once again. 28 year old Carrom sensation Cooray also happens to be the National Record holder when it comes to a winning strike with his 8 consecutive wins from 2003-2011.
Current World Champion Nishantha Farnando broke Coorays’s winning strike in 2012; who, unfortunately did not manage to secure a position in the Sri Lankan top 8 men players during the Championship.
During the 46th National Carrom Championship Chamil Cooray secured his position by beating the emerging young player Mohammad Saheed in a sensational match. Saheed managed to take out Nishantha Farnando in the pre quarterfinal matches however; Cooray beat him by 25/7, 7/25 and 25/Nil during the finals. Udesh Chandima and Viraj Fernando secured 3rd and 4th places respectively.
During the Women’s singles event, Roshita Joseph beat Chalani Lakmali in another sensational match, whereas, Yasika Rahubadde managed to secure 3rd position overcoming Madushika Rahubadde. Whereas, in Women’s doubles event Chalani Lakmali and her partner Joseph Roshita beat Yasika Rahubaddha and Buddhini Dias in two straight sets of 25/02, 25/16.
Cooray secured another title along with his partner Brindly Wikramasinghe during the Men’s Doubles Match beating Nishantha Fernando and Lahiru Ehsan in the final by 25/4 and 25/16. However, Nishantha Farnando and his partner Chalani Lakmali secured 1st place by beating Chamil Cooray and Madushika Kanchanamala in Mixed Doubles Match.
Sri Lankan 46th National Carrom Championship was held at the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka head quarters from 18th January to 8th of February. After cricket, Carrom board happens to be one of the most popular games in the country. Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka is one of the founding members of International Carrom Federation.
