SHARJAH- Karachi Kings steal the thriller by just nine runs against Peshawar Zalmi to register their second consecutive win in the HBL PSL 2017 at Sharjah.
Peshawar Zalmi skipper Darren Sammy won the all-important toss and opted to bowl first against Kings. The decision seemed to go wrong in early overs as Karachi’s new opening pair extracted 46 runs off the powerplay, without giving away a wicket.
Babar Azam (46) and Kumar Sangakkara (28) got out back to back in the middle overs, and then Chris Gayle (11) returned early too. This was when the run rate dropped down for Kings.
Two new batsmen Shoaib Malik and Ravi Bopara took their time to build the innings. Bopara (30) hit two back to back sixes to Imran Khan Jr but got out on the third ball.
What malik’s late cameo of 51 runs off just 27 balls was helpful for Kings to post 174 runs on the board.
Peshawar in response to Karachi’s target, slipped early, losing Tamim, Kamran and organ within four balls. Iftikhar Ahmed and Maqsood also returned to pavilion first, leaving Zalmi 5 for 58 in 7.4 overs.
Shakib showed some resistant, but he too fell short, scoring 18 runs. Zalmi were 69/6, and Karachi Kings fans were already celebrating.
It was the time when Boom Boom Afridi waked on the crease. He started to hit Kings bowlers all around the park, building up .. runs partnership with skipper Darren Sammy (34) who slowly picked up the momentum.
Both started waking Karachi bowlers big, and the crowed came to life again.
After Sammy’s wicket, the game seemed to slip away from Zalmi’s hands.
Wahab Riaz walked in but went back for just two runs, just when Hasan Ali’s first ball six on a no ball followed by a dot and a four to end the over was enough he could do.
Zalmi required 18 off the final over, and Afridi was on strike. He took eight off the first three balls, but he and Imran Khan Jr fell on two next balls to hand Karachi a tense win.
