KARACHI – The Supreme Court of Pakistan has directed concerned officials to remove all the signboards from Karachi footpaths till August 26 and show cause notices have been issued to absent officers for not appearance over repeated notices.
A two-member bench comprising of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Ameer Hani Muslim conducted the hearing in SC Karachi Registry on Thursday.
The court expressed concern and issued show cause notices to representatives of Korangi Cantonment Board, Malir Cantt, Faisal Cantonment, Defense Housing Authority (DHA) and SITE areas for not appearing on the hearing.
The members of Karachi Cantonment Board, KMC, Coast Guard and Rangers appeared before the apex court of the country.
Rangers and Coast Guard representatives told the court that they had not permitted anyone to install signboards in their jurisdiction. KMC member argued that no signboard has been placed on the footpath and have been installed only on the green belt.
Justice Ameer Hani Muslim remarked that the signboards placed on green belt are also visible on the footpath therefore; they all must be detached.
KMC officials were of the view that sign boards have been allowed on green belts only. Justice Ameer Hani Muslim sought the law according to which boards had been permitted.
Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali stated that every year thousands of signboards fell down killing dozens of people hence they must be removed as soon as possible.
