LONDON – Bad breath can be embarrassing and tough on those around you and 99 percent of us suffer from this condition when we wake up. This is because, during the night, we don’t produce the necessary saliva to wash away the bad bacteria that causes bad breath.
What causes bad breath?
Smoking can damage your gums, stain your teeth, and give you bad breath.
Eating strongly flavoured foods such as garlic, onions and spices are likely to make your breath smell. Strong-smelling drinks such as coffee and alcohol can also cause bad breath.
Bad breath caused by food and drink is usually temporary, and can be avoided by not eating or drinking these types of food and drink too often.
How can you test your breath?
You can also be able to tell whether your breath is stale by licking the inside of the wrist, leaving this to dry for a minute and sniffing. The inner wrist is not constantly handling things so it can give you a true reading of your breath. You can also do this on the back of your hand. It works because if you have halitosis, sulphur salts will be transferred from your tongue to your skin.
How can you get rid of bad breath?
While you’re brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, brush your tongue especially the back of the tongue. Brushing your tongue will remove smelly bacteria that cause bad breath.
