TRIPOLI, LIBYA – Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the surviving son of former Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has been sentenced to death by a Libyan court.
He was sentenced in absentia in Tripoli over killings during the country’s 2011 uprising.
Saif al-Islam was not present in court and gave evidence via video link.
He is being held in the southern town of Zintan by a militia group who refuse to hand him over to the central government.
Eight others including former Libyan spy chief Abdullah al Senussi were also sentenced to death by the court.
Saif al-Islam is also wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
It is worth mentioning here that Saif al-Islam was educated at the London School of Economics and he was the most high-profile of Colonel Gaddafi’s eight children.
He was once considered Libya’s de-facto prime minister and tipped by Western governments to one day lead the country towards democracy.
But he refused to abandon his father when protests erupted in several Libyan cities in early 2011.
Colonel Gaddafi was captured and killed by rebel fighters in his hometown of Sirte in October of that year.
