BERLIN – A robot has killed a 22-year-old contractor at Volkswagen factory in Germany.
Robot grabbed the worker firmly and crushed him against a metal plates causing serious injuries.
The worker died in hospital after the accident at a plant in Baunatal, 100km north of Frankfurt. He was part of a team that was setting up the stationary robot when it grabbed him.
Such fatalities are rare as robots are generally kept behind cages to prevent contact with humans, however the worker was reportedly inside the safety cage when he was injured, according to the Factory spokesman.
The company’s spokesman Heiko Hillwig said “initial conclusions indicate that human error was to blame, rather than a problem with the robot, which can be programmed to perform various tasks in the assembly process”.
He also added, it normally operates within a confined area at the plant, grabbing auto parts and manipulating them. Another contractor was present when the incident occurred, but wasn’t harmed, he said.
He declined to give any more details about the case, citing an ongoing investigation.
