NEW YORK- One long satin gown and a few steps by the pop star Rihanna propelled a Chinese leading fashion designer to global fame.
When Rihanna wore a fur trimmed yellow gown which weighs 25 Kg by the Chinese born designer Guo Pei to the Met Gala, it became the talk of Twitter, which vented with jokey comparisons to omelette and pizzas.
The fashion world pretty much came to a standstill, Glamour magazine wrote of the “jaw dropping” cloak, while Time magazine declared that the “singer stole the show”.
Yes, it might have looked like an omelette or a pizza. But really, Rihanna’s 2015 Met Gala dress was making a statement that had nothing to do with food. The singer was one of the only celebrities to walk the Met Gala red carpet wearing a dress by a Chinese designer.
UK bakers Greggs turning the dress into a meat filled pastry.
For those in the know, China’s Guo Pei had already long been compared to some of the late fashion industry greats, such as “Alexander McQueen” and “Coco Chanel”.
27 year old entertainer said,”I found it online, I was researching Chinese couture on the Internet and I found it.”
She added, “Its Chinese couture and it’s made by Guo Pei. It’s handmade by one Chinese woman and it took her two years to make.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Pei has two dresses displayed in the Costume Institute exhibit. Based in Beijing, Pei has been designing for over a quarter-century, dressing Chinese stars like “Li Binging” and “Zhang Ziy”.
As one of the most fashionable pop stars on the planet, Rihanna constantly raises the bar with her red carpet choices. Rihanna is Vogue’s new cover girl. The singer is gracing the cover of Vogue’s Special Edition Issue for the 2015 Met Gala.
