SALEM, UNITED STATES- This may be a bad news for sugar ‘cravers’ but it is important to know; a recent study has revealed that diet loaded with sugar and fat not only harms physical health but also the ability to think and memorize.
A new research conducted by scientists of Oregon State University reveals that a high-sugar, high-fat diet brings changes in gut bacteria which in result inflicts harm on cognitive functioning. It means that our brain’s ability to switch between thinking form one thought to another and adapt to changes happening in the environment can be impaired because of high-sugar diet.
The study has been published in the journal, Neuroscience and states that not only is the high-sugar harmful for cognitive flexibility but also can it damage the short-term and long-term memory.
The study’s lead author, Dr. Kathy Magnusson states that, “This work suggests that fat and sugar are altering your healthy bacterial systems, and that’s one of the reasons those foods aren’t good for you. It’s not just the food that could be influencing your brain, but an interaction between the food and microbial changes.”
Hence proved the claim by recently growing body of research that diet can prove to be an important factor impacting neurological and mental health, the impact can be both good and bad.
