Most of the girls have spent so much time trimming, shaping, and painting their nails or having someone else do all of that for you but they probably not have spent enough time to even look at them closely.
Once you look at your nails, you would be able to detect a wide variety of diseases. Lung disease can cause yellow discoloration, while psoriasis can look like fungus. Bands or lines in fingernails, as well as changes in color can also shows signs of illness.
Paying attention to your nail health is important but some nail issues have simple explanations like poor nutrition will cause brittle nails, but so will aging, excessive washing, and a variety of different things.
When toenail thickening occurs in younger people it is most commonly due to infection or injury. If the thickening is caused by toenail fungus, the nail may turn a yellow or brown color before it begins to thicken. Fungal infections often have a foul odor, and may cause fluid to collect under the nail.
Try to keep your nails healthy then but always remember that thick nails are the symbol of lung disease.
It is a condition that causes horizontal splits within the nail plate. The condition may appear as a single horizontal split between layers of the nail plate at the growing end or as multiple splits and loosening of the growing edge of the nail plate.
Keep the nails trimmed short to reduce worsening of nail splitting.
Spoon nails signify a deficiency in iron. When you have spoon nails, the blood supply doesn’t reach the middle of your nail to make it grow. In some cases, spoon nails can be a sign of heart disease.
An easy test: squeeze one or two drops of water from an eye dropper on the center of your nail. If the water sits on top rather than sliding off, its spoon nails.
In some cases, iron supplements may be prescribed.
Pitting is the presence of small depressions on the nail surface. Sometimes the nail is also crumbling. The nail can become loose and sometimes falls off.
It can be sign of the disease “psoriasis”, a long-term condition that tends to also cause red, flaky patches of skin (10%-50% of patients with psoriasis have pitted nails).
Brittle nails are often just a sign of ageing or long-term exposure to water or chemicals such as detergents and nail polish.
Nails can be strengthened by taking biotin (vitamin B7) supplements, by wearing gloves for all wet work and by frequently applying moisturising cream to the nails.
Clubbing of the fingers or toes refers to certain changes in your fingernails or toenails that occur due to an underlying condition. These changes can include the softening of the nail beds, which makes the nails seem to float instead of being attached, an increase in the angle between the cuticle and the nail, enlarging or bulging of the tip of the finger, which may also be red and warm, downward curving of the nail.
Clubbing of the fingers or toes is a general symptom of numerous diseases and disorders and the major one is lungs cancer.
