PARIS- A French man, Vincent Lambert of 39 has been in coma for seven years. He is in this state since he met a motorcycle accident and got paralyzed.
Mr. Lambert has been living on intravenous food and water at a hospital in Reims, North Eastern France since then. Doctors recommend that his life should be ended as there is no chance of recovery.
European Court of Human Rights has sustained the decision of the court of France that Mr. Lambert can have his life support ended deliberately.
It is pertinent to mention that there was a split among the family on this behalf. Mr. Lambert’s wife said that her husband would never have wanted to be kept in this state and it would have been his will which we are going to respect.
But his parents, devout Roman Catholics do not approve much of this idea. The case was taken to France’s highest court which favored to end the life support of the paralyzed man.
This decision sparked a fierce debate in France whether Euthanasia, the painless killing is legal in France or not. Finally, the European Court concluded the debate by giving such decision.
