In his speech during the admiration of Sheikh Hasina’s efforts against terrorism, in which zero tolerance towards terrorism was included, he passed that remark.
In smoothly going speech the Prime Minister said that he was proud of her stance towards terrorism “despite her being a woman”.
Most probably this remark was most likely meant to be a praise.
The Prime Minister’s remark may have been directed towards the fact that despite the hundreds of difficulties faced by a woman in a developing country, here was one who was fighting terrorism with all her might.
But, people back in India, found the statement to be unpleasant and misogynistic in nature.
The Prime Minister received a lot of criticism on Twitter from people about being sexist and a hashtag called ‘DespiteBeingAWoman’ managed to find its way to the top trend.
#DespiteBeingAWoman I am going out of town to report today. God, give me strength
