RIYADH- The Saudi Supreme Court has upheld the decision of prison and lashing sentence to a liberal blogger Raif Badawi, on the charge of ‘insulting Islam’ through electronic channels.
Badawi is an activist, a writer and a blogger who created the blog, Free Saudi Liberals. He ran it for four years and it invited online discussion on religious and political issues.
He was arrested in 2012 for the act of insulting Islam through electronic channels.
There was a great foreign uproar on this and the case was sent for review, when the first round of flogging was completed.
After the review, the court has upheld its decision regarding punishment and according to the sources, this decision is irrevocable.
The decision has again invited international condemnation.
The Saudi blogger’s wife has told the media that she is afraid that the punishment would start again on Friday. She expressed that, “this decision has shocked me.” She has called on the human right activists who had campaigned for her husband’s release to mobilize again.
Speaking from Canada, she said, “I was optimistic that the advent of Ramadan and the arrival of a new king would bring a pardon for the prisoners of conscience, including my husband.”
The first round was of 50 lashes which Badawi has endured, then the punishment was postponed on medical grounds. According to the sources, he is not fit for punishment and can die if the 1000 lashes are carried out.
