WASHINGTON- A massive breach has been launched on the personal data of around four million United States (US) government employees, and Chinese hackers are suspected for this act.
It has been confirmed by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) that both current and past employees have been affected.
The breach could have repercussions on any federal agency, officials stated.
US official imputed the hackers to be related to China. Beijing termed these allegations as “irresponsible”.
OPM stated that it got to know about the breach when it was attempting to employ an “aggressive effort” to update its cyber security systems.
It swore to contact all those individuals whose personal data may have been attacked in the coming weeks, and to offer them 18 months of free credit monitoring and identity theft insurance.
OPM works as a human resource department for the federal government. The security clearances and compile records of the federal government employees are issued by this body.
OPM databases are inclusive of information of the workers regarding job assignments, performance reviews and training, as per the details told by the officials.
OPM termed this breach as “cyber intrusion”.
