RIYADH- A twitter account belonging to a Saudi girl solicited sympathies and funds also from many until it was discovered that it was being used to con the social media users.
The image on the account is of a teen girl named Sara Ibrahim who is smiling during stages of her treatment as she is the patient of leukemia. The account has been followed by more than 75 thousand people.
Thousands among them tweeted on hashtag Friend_ of_Sara and gave comments like, “Sara you are my sister and daughter and I hope to see you a bride and happy.” Not only this, but many also donated funds for her treatment. These funds were transferred to the bank accounts mentioned on the twitter account. But it would be very difficult to estimate the amount donated.
Later, it was discovered that the account was fake. This fact was revealed by a common Saudi twitter user. He tracked the account and found that the images have been taken from social media sites and the girl in the images is not Saudi at all, she is an American named as Esme Miller.
When further digging up was one by a twitter user [email protected], it was revealed that the account was fake. He posted the news in his post and it was retweeted several times. When the news of deception got popular, the whole story came into view.
A Saudi prince Khalid Al Saud Al Saud tweeted a phone number and told that this number was given to him by the fake account users and that he used to talk with the fake Sara.
But many people are concerned about the impact this incident could inflict on those who really are suffering from fatal disease.
