ISLAMABAD- The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) revealed to the Supreme Court (SC) that it has tapped 6,856 phones around the country in the month of May and also gave details regarding the previous three months as well.
ISI told the data in compliance with the May 22 order by SC, in which the apex court demanded the government to furnish details about agencies tapping the phone calls.
The Deputy Attorney General, Sajid Ilyas Bhatti furnished a classified report in front of the three judge bench, presided by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, in which the details regarding the number of phones tapped in the past four months were reproduced.
As per the details revealed by the bench, at least 6,523 phone numbers were tapped in February, 6,819 in March, 6,742 in April and 6,856 in May, while the bench remarked on the details furnished.
Nisar commented on the matter, “We cannot keep this matter under the carpet as these are the secret rights of the people, which should not be violated.”
“If the agencies are legally authorized to tap the phones then the court has no objection. However, if the agency officials are doing it without any legal authority then it is not right”, he said further.
