HUBEI, CHINA- A Chinese cruise ship named as the Eastern Star, carrying 458 people, ranging from grandmothers and grandfathers to a three year old kid, has capsized on river Yangtze in the Hubei province of China.

Five people have died and hundreds have not been discovered yet. As per the details revealed by the state media, the rescuers heard voices from the upside down boat and about a dozen people were rescued thereafter.

Allegedly, there were no emergency signal sent and alarm was raised by the ones who had managed to reach the shore by swimming.

The boat was carrying tourists majorly who aged from 50 to 80 years. They were travelling from the eastern city, Nanjing to the north western city, Chongqing. This becomes at least 1,500kn (930 miles) long journey.

The captain and the chief engineer have survived and been taken into custody for investigation. They have told that the boat was trapped in a cyclone.

According to their account, the vessel sank within minutes and many people were asleep at the time.

The incident happened at the place where the world’s third largest and Asia’s largest river meets the depth of about 15 meters or 50 feet. This is the Damazhou waterway section of the river.

The rescue workers are trying their best to rescue the passengers been trapped in the upside down hull of the ship but the strong winds and heavy rain are making things difficult.

According to the sources, China has not suffered from a disaster of such a large scale for a long time.
