NEW YORK – On Friday, Five Pakistani peacekeepers are awarded with posthumous award by United Nations. Posthumous award is a recognition for peace keepers who laid down their lives while serving the cause of peace around the world.
The ceremony was held on the annual International Day of United Nations’ peacekeepers. Honoring activities were held at United Nations’ Headquarters in New York, and at peacekeeping operations and offices around the world.
Pakistan is the second largest contributor of the UN peacekeeping team.

8,163 personals including 7,581 troops, 487 police officials and 95 military experts of Pakistan are working in UN peacekeeping mission.
They are working in the areas of Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Liberia, Sudan and Western Sahara.
Names of the Pakistani soldiers who won this award are Naib Subedar Saleem, Akhtar and Lance Naik Ibrar Mehmood. They served with United Nations’ visit in Liberia (UNMIL).
Sepoy Fahad Iftikhar was deployed with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
Pakistan has lost the third most soldiers in UN peacekeeping operations, with 137 soldiers killed.
