ISLAMABAD – World Health Organisation (WHO) has selected Pakistan as the vice chair of their prestigious Executive Board.
The country’s promotion to the position of vice chair of the global forum is reflection of growing confidence of the international health fraternity in the country’s health leadership.
In its executive role, the board ensures that decisions and policies of the World Health Assembly are carried out. The Executive Board also advises the World Health Assembly, and provides guidance on diverse health policy, planning and strategic issues.
On the recommendations of State Minister for National Health Services Saira Afzal Tarar, Health Director General Dr. Assad Hafeez was Pakistan’s nominee for the important slot in the Executive Board of WHO.
The WHO executive board has 34 members comprising top health experts and senior government representatives.
It is pertinent to mention here that being the 6th most populous country in the world and largest country in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of WHO, Pakistan is seen as major player in health policy in the region.
