Women at a larger scale are participating in local bodies’ election, in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).
But still they are bound in face of some social taboos, as cannot print their names on the play cards and posters for their campaign.
They use names of their fathers, husbands and sons instead of their own.
Displaying their pictures for the campaign is out of question.
Only a few ‘liberal’ and ‘modern’ participants are present in the circle of competitors, who published their names on the banners for the purpose of campaign.
The ‘custodians’ of these women were of the view that their culture does not allow to expose the women’s name.
As one of the candidates’ campaigner said: “Women can take part in elections. That is enough. There is no need to use their pictures or even names, as it is against our culture.”
Another person, husband of a female candidate told that: “I meet male voters asking them to vote for my wife and she meets women, and this arrangement is working out for us,”
He further said, there are four female candidates contending for the same village council but they are not using any posters.
Another contestant told that a few of us have printed our names on the banners and according to rest of the contestants it’s a very bold move.
