KARACHI – Cigarette sellers are selling local cigarettes in Pakistan at very high rates. Brands like Gold Leaf, Marlboro etc. are highly purchased smoking brands in Pakistan.

According to the sources, Rs. 100 packet of Gold Leaf is being sold at Rs. 110 while Rs. 180 Marlboro packet is worth Rs. 240. Similarly Rs. 120 pack of Benson and Hedges is being sold at Rs. 150 while Rs. 110 Dunhill is available at Rs. 145. Capstan and Morven are being sold at Rs. 5 higher than its actual price.

Dealers told that from the past months, supply of local cigarettes has slowed down by the manufacturers.

According to figures of large scale manufacturing (LSM) issued by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the production of cigarettes was standing at 46.7 billion in July-March 2014-15 while last year, the figure was 47bn.

A dealer said suppliers have piled up the stocks and after the budget when new taxes and duties would be imposed, they would release it.

The Smokers burn more than Rs250 billion to ash in a year.

It is pertinent to mention here that tobacco is responsible for 100,000 deaths annually in Pakistan.
