ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked more than 8 million connections as the deadline for the Biometric SIM re-verification ends on Thursday, May 15, 2015.
This was the extended deadline as the biometric SIM re-verification process was incomplete at the end of first phase.
Earlier Pakistan government announced April 12, 2015, as deadline for biometric SIM re-verification but at that time only 70 million connections were verified due to which Ministry of Interior extended the deadline to 15 April 2015.
Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Ismail Shah also announced that deadline for biometric re-verification of SIMs will not be extended anymore and all the unverified SIMs will be blocked.
According to the spokesperson of PTA, 80 million SIMs has been verified till the deadline by the government, whereas 8 million unverified SIMs have been blocked.
It is pertinent to mention here that the biometric re-verification system required all SIM owners to personally visit sale points set up by cellular operators across the country to get their connections re-verified through thumb impressions
The government and cellular operators also ran public service messages and advertisements asking the users to get their connections reverified.
As many as 80,000 biometric verification machines worth $300 to $400 each were installed throughout the country.
