The aim of World Asthma Day is to increase awareness, care and support for those affected by asthma. The primary focus is supporting the person with asthma; support may also extend to family, friends and caregivers.
The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) work together with health care groups and asthma educators world-wide to raise alertness about asthma, and celebrates World Asthma Day on the first Tuesday of May every year. The objective is to develop asthma awareness and care in the world, including health care experts, educators and members of the public who would be attentive in volunteering such services.

The first World Asthma Day was directed in 1998. More than 35 countries Participated in World Asthma Meeting held in Barcelona, Spain. After that every year this participation increased in number and this event became the world’s greatest event for asthma awareness.

The theme for World Asthma Day is “You Can Control Your Asthma”, with a subtheme, “It’s Time To Control Your Asthma”.
During previous World Asthma Days, the theme had been ‘Reduce The Burden Of Asthma’. People with asthma were made aware of positive steps they can take to help them cope with their condition.

Things that trigger your asthma:
Many things in your surroundings can boost your asthma. One important thing we should know is; what triggers your asthma the most? This question can make it easy to control asthma.

Common triggers are:

• Second hand smoke
• Wood smoke
• Pets
• Chemical irritants
• Molds
• Pollens Cockroaches and pests
• Dust mites
• Outdoor pollution
• Certain foods or food groups

Things to Remember:
If you are asthmatic, always have an albuterol inhaler with yourself. Place these inhalers in different places where you can get them easily: Like in your bag, at work place, and in several places at home. If there are other rescue medicines that you need during asthma attack, such as steroid tablets, keep those with Inhalers at different places as well.
