SUSSEX – Relationship is a matter of compatibility and not of numbers. There are younger people with matured thinking and there are older people with childish thinking. It’s not about age; it’s about maturity and compatibility. As long as the couple is happy then age is not a hindrance.
A moderately aged lady and her spouse from Crawley, West Sussex. who she began going out with when he was 16 are celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary regardless of a 29-year age gap.
William Smith was just a high- schooler when he experienced passionate feelings for his best friend’s mum, Marilyn Buttigieg.
The pair experienced harsh criticism from family and companions for the astounding age gap.
But they feel they have proved their critics wrong because they’re still attached.
This year it has been 10 years since they are together and tomorrow is their 6th wedding anniversary.
Marilyn who is now 54 and a grandmother of eight kids, said: “The age gap doesn’t matter. Age is just a number and it’s about time people got over it.”
William who is now 25, said: It was love at first sight when I fastened my eyes on my friend’s mum. It all happened when they invited me to play computer games.
William said: “Three or four months went by, then another couple of months – I didn’t have the courage to say anything about it, probably due to the fact of the age gap, and the fact she was my mate’s mum.”
When he finally asked her out, she dumped her husband and got into the relationship with him who was just a teen at that time.
A lot of criticism from people was faced by the couple. Many of them disapproved the 29 year age gap and predicted the marriage will be a failure.
Marilyn’s children also cut off contact with her after her marriage
Marilyn, who works at a doctors’ surgery in Crawley Down, said of their marriage: “I couldn’t wish for anything better than my marriage and husband. We proved all critics wrong. Everybody was saying it wasn’t going to last – we’ve proved we are a real thing.”
“I don’t look at Marilyn and think, ‘She’s nearly 30 years older than me.’ She’s a nice person so age doesn’t matter.” William added.
Marilyn who is also a mum of seven children said she and William still have to bear the occasional odd looks in the street.
She said: “I suppose we always will but people should realize by now after all these years it’s a real thing and let us be. We thought it would stop. We would always have the odd looks; we don’t really care to be honest.
“We’ve had so much grief over the years nothing shocks us anymore. The age gap doesn’t matter. Age is just a number and it’s about time people got over it.”
She also said: “It’s OK for a man to do it, why it not OK if a woman is does it?”
William said he had noticed that the time flies so quickly. It feels like we just built our life together.
He said: “Everything is good in our relationship. I just cannot fathom where the time has gone. Our main goal is to make more memories. Hopefully time slows down a bit because it’s going too quickly.”
