The comprehensive and methodical work of this great German philosopher in epistemology , ethics, and aesthetics had a far reaching impact on modern philosophy.
Kant was one of the foremost thinkers of the Enlightenment and his ideas marked a new era in the field of Philosophy.
He was of the opinion that the basic concepts or ideas frame the human structures. His philosophy was truly one of a kind in the sense that he thought ‘reason’ should be the source of morality. He rationalized the very essence of morality and tired to bridge the gap between empirical and rationalist school of thoughts. He played a role of a moderator and equally highlighted the importance of empiricism and rationalism in understanding the world we live in.
One of his greatest contributions is in the form of his essay ‘Perpetual Peace’ that gave birth to the ideals of world peace.
In this essay, he argues in favor of civil constitutions with Republican forms of government, world citizenship, Free states, abolishment of standing armies and principal of nonintervention in other states.
Though he was an idealist in a true sense who wanted this world to acquire ‘perpetual peace’, yet all his philosophies carry weight and are very practical.
Let’s remember some of his time tested quotes on his birthday:
‘Morality is not the doctrine of how we may make ourselves happy, but how we may make ourselves worthy of happiness’.
‘Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life.’
‘Happiness is not an ideal of reason, but of imagination’
‘Even philosophers will praise war as ennobling mankind, forgetting the Greek who said: ‘War is bad in that it begets more evil than it kills.’
‘May you live your life as if the maxim of your actions were to become universal law.’
Happy birthday Immanuel Kant!!
