A folk singer who is also China’s first lady, Peng Liyuan who is also the wife of current Chinese President Xi Jinping was born on November 20, 1962.
She has won many honors in singing competitions nationwide. She is the 1st lady who got master’s degree in traditional ethnic music. She is a civilian member of China’s People’s Liberation Army and holds the civilian rank equivalent to major general in China.
She got married to Chinese president Xi Jinping in 1987. When Peng Liyuan met Xi Jinping in 1986, she was already a famous singer while he was the deputy mayor of Xiamen City in southern Fujian province and a divorcee. After just months of dating, they married in September 1987. They have a daughter, Xi Mingze, who was born in 1992.
Peng ranked 57th in Forbes’s list of the world’s most 100 powerful women last year.
On November 20, 2014, Massey University in New Zealand awarded an “Honorary Doctorate” to the First lady of China in recognition of her international contributions to performing arts and health and education.
She is also a World Health Organization (WHO) Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS since 2011.
The first lady along with her husband, the Chinese president Xi Jinping is in Pakistan on historic two-day visit.
