Deputy Inspector General M. Kntha Rao says in Indian state of Andhra Pradesh more than 100 dealers were opened fire on the police, after being under attacked police officers fired on them in self-defense.
The police chief said that police officers asked smugglers to hand over the illegally cut trees to police.
DIG said that Forest Department officers were also present with the police officer but the smugglers refused to hand over trees to the police.
He said that due to the invasion of the traffickers, police had to open fire on them to defend themselves.
Rao said that dead bodies 9 smugglers were found from other location and 11 other bodies were found from another location.
Against gangs smuggling of sandalwood trees, the new task force chief Rao said in Chittoor district incident 7 policemen were also got injured.
Local officials of Forest Department say that the officials of anti-trafficking force were busy in search operation in the forest when smugglers attacked on them with ax and hurled stones.
