ISLAMABAD – During the last five years more than 3,400 Pakistani citizens have renounced their nationality after adopting the citizenship of other countries while other 1,500 are waiting to surrender their citizenship.
According to media reports, around 251 Pakistanis have adopted the nationality of Canada, 171 of the United States, 145 of Australia, 121 of New Zealand, 75 of Norway while 54 to Denmark. The rest of the people got the citizenship of other countries in Europe and in the Middle East.
Immigration officials said, “Around 3,400 cases of renunciation of Pakistani nationality have successfully completed”.
According to a submitted report in Ministry of Interior, 1,534 Pakistanis, want to renounce their citizenship and they are currently in process while 141 applications of citizenship registration are pending for many years have also been decided.
The immigration officials said over 5,000 Afghan refugees have also applied for the citizenship of Pakistan.
The applications have been sent to the departments concerned for verification and will be finalized that whether they can stay in Pakistan or not.
