“I dream of painting and then I paint my dream” These are the wonderful words of Vincent Willem van Gogh one of the finest and brilliant painters of all times. He was born on 30 March 1853. He was a major Post-Impressionist painter. This Dutch artist’s work had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His output includes portraits, self-portraits, landscapes and still lives of cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers.
Interestingly, Van Gogh used to sketch as a child but did not paint until his late twenties; he completed many of his best-known works during the last two years of his life. In just over a decade he produced more than 2,100 artworks, including 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketches and prints.
He was a true genius who used radiant colors, robust lines and eddying brush strokes to induce a poignant reaction in the viewer.
Known as the most distinguished and outstanding artist, Van Gogh was born today, 162 years ago on March 30, 1853, in Groot Zundert, Netherlands. He tried his luck at various careers in his young age like becoming an art dealer, a junior school-teacher and a priest. Then eventually it dawned upon him that he was born to be a Painter. He adopted fine arts as his profession at the age of 27.
Surprisingly he never received any formal training. The self-taught Van Gogh rapidly advanced from an unskilled greenhorn to an exceptionally groundbreaking artist with an unconventional style derived from extensive reading, analyzing and experimenting.
So intense was his love for Painting that he himself said:
“I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process.”
To celebrate his birthday let’s read and reflect over some of the inspirational sayings of this great artist:
“Even the knowledge of my own fallibility cannot keep me from making mistakes. Only when I fall do I get up again.”
“As we advance in life it becomes more and more difficult, but in fighting the difficulties the inmost strength of the heart is developed.”
“It is better to be high-spirited even though one makes more mistakes, than to be narrow-minded and all too prudent”.
“Love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is done well.”
Though he died decades ago, yet his legacy lives on. For, he is one of the greatest artists of all times. Time and Space cannot kill the soul of a true artist for it is eternal. Happy Birthday Van Gogh!!
