 Majority of Pakistanis agree with government decision to privatize PIA | PakistanTribeISLAMABAD – Majority of Pakistanis (70%) agree with the government’s decision to privatize PIA’s shares. 62% believe it will have a positive impact on Pakistan’s economy. 

According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, Majority of Pakistanis (70%) agree with the government’s decision to privatize PIA’s shares. 62% of the respondents believe it will have a positive impact on Pakistan’s economy.

A nationally representative sample of men and women, from across the four provinces was asked “Recently, the national government in trying to solve the problems of PIA and the national deficit, announced the privatization of 26% of PIA shares. Please tell us, to what extent do you agree or disagree with the government’s decision to privatize the shares?” Responding to this, 29% strongly agree while 41% somewhat agree. 13% replied saying they somewhat disagreed whereas 13% strongly disagreed. 4% did not respond.

Strongly Disagree: 13%

Somewhat Disagree: 13%

Strongly Agree: 29%

Somewhat Agree: 41%

In follow up, people were further asked: “In your opinion, will this decision by the government affect the economy positively or negatively?” In answer, 62% said it will affect the economy positively while 33% claimed otherwise. 5% did not respond.

Affect Negatively: 33%

Affect Positively: 62%

The study was released by Gilani Foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2619 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during September 14, 2013 – Sept 21, 2013. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
