QUETTA – The security issues for Polio team once again stopped polio campaign in Quetta, PakistanTribe reported.
Sources in the Baluchistan Health Department confirmed that the provincial administration had failed to provide timely security to polio vaccination teams in Quetta, the capital city of Baluchistan.
“Without security guards, we cannot move our teams in the city,” he said.
Security of polio teams have been tightened in the aftermath of attacks at polio team in Quetta and other parts of Baluchistan.
Militants had killed a polio worker and driver of polio team in custody last month in Zhob district of Baluchistan.
The attacks on polio team is very common in Pakistan. Many polio workers have been killed in attacks. Last year in October the Lady Health Workers Employees Union had boycotted an emergency vaccination campaign in Balochistan following an attack on a polio team near Quetta in which four polio workers – including three women – were shot dead.
The immunization campaign in 18 districts of Quetta was temporarily suspended for the day after an attack which killed four and injured three vaccinators. However, Balochistan Health Minister on Wednesday announced the emergency vaccination campaign would resume from tomorrow.
“The victims were not polio workers but vaccinators who are taking part in a week-long emergency immunization campaign in Quetta,” Balochistan Health Minister Rehmat Saleh Baloch clarified.
“No one should think the campaign will stop in any part of Balochistan,” Baloch said while addressing the Director Public Relation Office in Quetta.
