The 39 year old actress who is also UN refugee agency’s Special Envoy last visited Iraq in the year 2012 and this time, she is on a two day official visit. While visiting the refugee camps, Jolie met the Islamist group ISIS survivors in the camp located at Khanke. The camp houses refugees from the Yazidi minority who were living in Sinjar and its neighboring areas.
Not only did Jolie visit the camp she also keenly socialized with some of the inhabitants of the refugee camp. The displaced women also narrated their stories and accounts of pain, loss and hardships to the Oscar winning actress.
After visiting the Internally Displaced People in the camp, Hollywood superstar also delivered a speech. She said that: “It is shocking to see how the humanitarian situation in Iraq has deteriorated since my last visit. On top of large numbers of Syrian refugees, two million Iraqis were displaced by violence in 2014 alone. Many of these innocent people have been uprooted multiple times as they seek safety amidst shifting frontlines.”
Jolie said: “Nothing can prepare you for the horrific stories of these survivors of kidnap, abuse and exploitation and to see how they cannot all get the urgent help they need and deserve,” she further added: “The needs so dramatically outstrip the resources available in this vast crisis. Much more international assistance is needed.”
Talking on the occasion, Angelina Jolie urged world leaders to do more and play their respective part in ending the miseries of the people who have been affected from the conflict. She said that: “We are being tested here, as an international community, and so far—for all the immense efforts and good intentions—we are failing.”
