RIYADH – Amnesty international opposed KSA’s decision on lashes for blogger and requested for amnesty for blogger Raif Badawi, International media reported.
Rafai Badawi, a guy who started free liberal thought provoking web site ‘Free Saudi Liberals’ was arrested by KSA central government and was sentenced for 1,000 lashes in general public.
His web was also shut down and he was imposed a claim of ‘Insulting Islam’. Royal court of KSA had announced for him 50 lashes every Friday for 20 weeks and today was his first day.
Amnesty International said Badawi was due to undergo the first round of 50 lashes in a public flogging after Friday prayers, which will continue every Friday for 20 weeks.
Badawi was originally sentenced to seven years in prison and 600 lashes in July last year, but an appeals court overturned the sentence and ordered a retrial – which then earned him a more severe sentence of 1,000 lashes and ten years in prison.
Reaction of US emerged in its press release as”We are greatly concerned by reports that human rights activist Raif Badawi will start facing the inhumane punishment of a 1,000 lashes, in addition to serving a 10-year sentence in prison for exercising his rights to freedom of expression and religion. The United States Government calls on Saudi authorities to cancel this brutal punishment and to review Badawi’s case and sentence. The United States strongly opposes laws, including apostasy laws, that restrict the exercise of these freedoms, and urges all countries to uphold these rights in practice.”
It is worth mentioning here that Saudi Arabia left no space for liberal Democratic thoughts in country and Royal rule is the only rule which is considered best for people as KSA claims that denying this ‘Islamic way’ of government is insult of Islam.
