PESHAWAR – One day polio campaign started in Peshawar on Sunday, more than 70,000 inoculate aged below five years, during campaign in the area.

According to details, the polio campaign would immunize 7,94,000 children in Peshawar city whereas 7,000 police officers have also been deployed for the security of polio workers.

The local administration has imposed section-144 to ban pillion riding during the polio drive and has also ordered to take strict action against violators.

Moreover, the Health Department has made more than 4,000 polio teams.

Earlier, at least 5 polio cases emerged in Quetta in addition to one case each in Killa Abdullah, Zob, Khizdar and Nasirabad District whereas Killa Abdullah witnessed 10 polio cases, which is the most in the province.

The total number of polio cases reported this year has risen to 268. It should be noted that Pakistan is one of the only three countries in the world with polio infections.

WHO and concerned anti-polio officials are active in eradicating the virus from the country whereas special immunization drives are also held on regular basis.

The country has also been slapped with travel restrictions due to the virus and the citizens have to travel with polio-free certificates to other countries.

However, attacks on polio teams and reluctance of parents to immunize their children are one of the major hurdles in eradicating the disease.
