LONDON – Missing masterpiece lost for 90 years is discovered in the background of Stuart Little movie: Art historian finds painting while watching children’s film with his daughter.
The masterpiece had been missing since the 1920s.“Sleeping Lady with Black Vase,” an avant-garde work by Hungarian painter Robert Bereny, was last seen in public in 1928 until it was used as a prop in the 1999 movie, “Stuart Little.”
But there it was, hanging on the wall in the 1999 children’s movie “Stuart Little,” a film featuringHugh Laurie, Geena Davis and Jonathan Lipnicki alongside a talking mouse, which was voiced by Michael J. Fox.
Art historian Gergely Barki recognized the long-missing Robert Bereny painting “Sleeping Lady with Black Vase” while watching the movie with his daughter in 2009.
“I went to the television and tried to clean the windscreen. Is it real?” Barki said in an interview with News agency.

The painting, which is up for auction at a starting price of 110,000 euros had been bought by the film’s set designer for ‘next-to-nothing’ in an antique shop in California.
The masterpiece had been missing since the 1920s.
