NEW YORK – Five feet tall Knightscope K5 robots have started working as security guard in Silicon Valley, robots were designed by a robotics company, Knightscope.
“Robocop”-style robots, equipped with microphones, speakers, cameras, laser scanners and sensors. The robot is 1.5 meters (5 feet) high and weighs about 136 kilograms representing a combo of laser scanning, wheel encoders, inertial measurements.
The robots are programmed to notice unusual behavior and alert controllers. It also has odor and heat detectors, and can monitor pollution in carpets as well.
The Robocops can remember up to 300 number plates a minute, monitoring traffic.
The robots have a battery that could work for 24 hours on a single charge, though the K5 is supposed to monitor its battery life and wheel over to a charging pad when needed. It takes 15 or 20 minutes to refuel.
The robotics company says that it will be placing the robots in patrol malls, offices, and local neighborhoods, as well as outdoor spaces like corporate campuses, college campuses and open air malls.
The robots are autonomous and have been developed to function with any interference from the people, and to avoid confrontations.
