NEW YORK – Nokia tweeted a mysterious photo of what appears to be a black box on Monday; it closely resembles what could be a set-top box, which powers streaming on TVs. If the black box Nokia is teasing is, in fact, a set-top box, then it would be in competition with major companies like Apple, Roku and Amazon.
The news comes on the heels of various Nokia setbacks. The company sold its mobile phone line to Microsoft, which was quick to abandon the brand from its mobile business (it dropped the “Nokia” name from the Lumia smartphone, too).
But Nokia is apparently allowed to lend its name to products that aren’t phones. In an attempt to breathe some life into the brand, Nokia is licensing its name and technology to other companies that build products.
In other tweets over the last several days, Nokia seems to be remaining optimistic during a time of change.
