ISLAMABAD – Another potential candidate for the post of Chief Election Commissioner – former Chief Justice Tasadduk Hussain Jilani – has turned down the offer but he was initially agreed to take the chance.
According to reports, Justice Tasadduk’s name earned the consensus of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and all major allies and opposition parties except one – the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Reports further revealed that despite Imran Khan’s objection PML-N lead federal government had moved on to offer Justice Jilani. He, however, had made two conditions. One, Election Commission of Pakistan will have the powers following the model of Indian Election Commission. Second, there should be unanimous consensus over his name.
The second condition was not acquired and Justice Jilani excused from taking the post. PTI is favoring the name of Justice (rtd.) Nasir Aslam Zahid for the appointment.
Not to forget that earlier, Justice (rtd.) Rana Bhagwan Das had also refused to take the job.
